Professor Associate Professor at IGOT-ULisboa
Associate Professor at IGOT-ULisboa, researcher at Centre of Geographical Studies (CEG) and “Climate Change and Environmental Systems – Zephyrus”, research group former coordinator. Holds a PhD in Physical Geography from the University of Lisbon since 2003. Full member of the “F3 - Food Farm & Forestry” College and the Tropical College of the University of Lisbon and Scientific International Associations: International Society of Biometeorology - ISB and International Association of Urban Climate – IAUC. Topic Editor of Atmosphere/MDPI journal since October 2019, section editor (climatology) of Finisterra – Portuguese Journal of Geography. Research topics and techniques: Urban Climate Changes; Applied Climatology; Thermal Comfort and Health, Urban Environment; Atmospheric Pollution in Cities; Micro-meteorology Modelling; Thermal Remote Sensing.
In the last 30 years, was involved in national and international projects, among them: “SECOA - Solutions for Environmental Contrasts in Coastal Areas”; “ADVICE - Annual to Decadal Variations in Climate in Europe; “URBKLIM - Climate and Urban Sustainability Perception of Comfort and climatic Risks”; “KLIMHIST - Reconstruction and model simulations of past climate in Portugal using documentary and early instrumental sources (17th-19th century)”; National Plan for Territorial Development of Mozambique; Metropolitan Plan for the Adaptation to Climate Change of the Lisbon Metropolitan Area; “The Cape Verde Natural Hazards and Risk Profile of Cape Verde”, Drought Risk Assessment coordinator, for the UNPD.

Pesquisador ativo em conforto térmico e ambiente interno desde 1981, quando iniciou seu doutorado sob a supervisão dos pioneiros do conforto adaptativo, Drs. Auliciems e Szokolay, da Universidade de Queensland. Em 1985 iniciou uma bolsa de pós-doutorado sob a supervisão do “pai da ciência do conforto térmico”, P.O. Fanger, da Universidade Técnica de Dinamarca. Em 1987, de Dear assumiu seu primeiro cargo de professor na Universidade Nacional de Cingapura. Ele voltou para Austrália como professor sênior na Universidade Macquarie em Sydney em 1991 e em 2009 foi transferido para a Escola de Arquitetura e Design e Panning na Universidade de Sydney, onde estabeleceu o Laboratório de Qualidade Ambiental Interna (IEQ), que continua para liderar hoje como Professor Emérito. Autor de mais de 220 artigos revisados por pares, de Dear é atualmente o pesquisador mais citado em conforto térmico e IEQ (Scopus). Atualmente é editor de Energia e Edifícios da Elsevier, Ciência e Tecnologia da ASHRAE para o Ambiente Construído e Relatórios Científicos da Natureza. Em 2020, ele foi homenageado com a medalha “Ordem da Austrália” por seus serviços prestados educação arquitetônica e o ambiente construído.
